1. What material?
The material for making melamine tableware is called melamine resin, also called melamine-formaldehyde resin. As the name implies, it is a polymer formed by curing melamine and formaldehyde at high temperature. You are not unfamiliar with melamine, it is the melamine added in the 2008 Sanlu milk powder incident.
2. Will melamine tableware cause health problems?
The melamine and formaldehyde migrated by qualified melamine tableware are within the TDI specified by FDA. In addition, the migration of the amount of melamine depends on the food temperature, acidity, contact time, the price of the tableware and whether it is a standard melamine resin, because some unscrupulous merchants will mix urea-formaldehyde resin in the process of manufacturing inferior products.
3. Is melamine tableware safe?
In the safety and risk assessment of melamine tableware, it is pointed out that this plastic tableware can be used safely. But there are some limitations, and they recommend following three tips to ensure that these utensils are used in a safe manner.
(1) Do not use melamine utensils for infants or young children, especially do not use melamine tableware for formula milk;
(2) Do not use melamine tableware to hold hot food or beverages, and do not heat them in a microwave oven;
(3) Avoid high-acid foods.
